1. Faith Matters undertook the fieldwork and write up of the ‘Mosques in Communities’ project which was conducted on behalf of MINAB (the Mosques and Imams National Advisory Board). This report builds good practice and ensures that mosques become not just institutions but living parts of their local communities, thereby ensuring that they play constructive civic roles. There are a number of recommendations made in this report which touch upon (i) Communication and inclusion (ii) Governance (iii) The role of Muslim faith leaders / imams (iv) Operational delivery in mosques (v) Relations with local authorities and (vi) Engaging with civil society organisations. We hope that mosques, mosque executive committees and imams find the recommendations practical and deliverable.

It is really hoped that this report can begin some of the discussions about how such institutions can play greater outreach roles in what will be a difficult economic climate over the next few years. We all have core responsibilities in that journey and in realising that we all have local social responsibilities to each other and for the common good.

Read the report here http://faith-matters.org/images/stories/fm-publications/the-mosques-in-communities-project.pdf

If you are interested in playing a role in this, please contact Rehman Anwar: rehman@faith-matters.co.uk

Hopefully most of you are aware of the London Board’s ongoing action-research project funded through the Migration Impact Fund, which aims to promote a step-change in safeguarding London’s children living in minority ethnic, culture or faith communities or groups. Karen Walkden has been managing Barnet’s contribution to this project, and many of you will have participated through focus groups or completion of the online survey.

Although the broader project activity and findings will be published in a formal project report in the New Year, three additional outputs are scheduled for launch at the London Safeguarding Children Board conference on 5 December 2011. They are:

a) Guidance about the additional issues which a professional may need to think about and act on, in relation to children and families across different cultures and faiths, to accompany the London Child Protection Procedures;

b) A local safeguarding children board model engagement strategy to assist minority ethnic communities and faith groups in protecting their children and working with statutory services to do so; and

c) A training toolkit to help professionals to identify children across cultures and faiths who are in need of support or protection.

London Councils are now issuing the Guidance and Model Engagement Strategy for a short period of additional consultation with the London LSCBs (the training toolkit will follow before the end of the month) until Friday 21 October 2011.

If you would like to review these documents and contribute your views, then please contact Karen Walkden – karen@flourishing.me.uk – and she will e-mail you the drafts.

The Pan-London Safeguarding Children Culture & Faith Project is an action-research Project which aims to promote a step-change in safeguarding London’s children living in minority ethnic, culture or faith communities or groups. We want to do this together with local minority ethnic communities and faith groups and the frontline professionals who work with them.

Community Barnet has been involved in developing the methodology for this project with London Councils and colleagues from several other London Boroughs.

Please help to ensure that Barnet viewpoints are included.

You may also have been asked to participate in a focus group in the Borough where you work, but we would still value your views through this very quick online survey. The survey will ask you to consider the kinds of safeguarding advice, training and support that you need to work safely with children in your activities. You can do this anonymously or complete the contact details page at the end of the survey.

Many thanks for your help. Survey deadline 15th July

Youth Shield, Barnet’s youth safeguarding panel are putting together the views of Barnet’s young people in a report to Barnet’s Safeguarding Children Board. They are collecting young people’s views via questionnaires and focus group sessions. Please support them in getting as many responses as possible by passing the link below to all young people you know, or work with, aged 14-25 years. The results will highlight young people’s genuine views, enabling the Safeguarding Children Board a rare insight into what young people want and need with regards to safeguarding. Questions 53-59 focus on faith and culture.

The panel members will also be contacting groups to book in their focus group sessions, so look out for their email or call.

Many thanks for your support.
